Working from home gives you tons of freedom, which is why, more and more people find it an attractive proposition for people living in the UK.
However surrounded by all your home comforts can for some people often lead to becoming increasingly distracted and eventually less productive.
So, the big question is, how exactly do you keep focused on the job at hand, keeping your productivity levels at a constant high?
Well we’ve put together a top ten list of the best ways to keep your eyes on the ball and away from the television, facebook or long breaks in the garden!
- If possible, create a separate work space. When you step inside this space and close the door behind you, then mentally your at work. This should help you to focus on work when your in this space. It’s a good idea to then leave this area for your lunch and coffee breaks to carry on that seperation.
- Keep that area clean. When your home is a mess (and mine is never really clean for more than 24hours) you can become too relaxed and in extreme cases it can be a real distraction and even make you feel uncomfortable and
- Take time out for a stretch. A short burst of excercise can re-invigorate you and you might want to think about bringing this into your daily routine. We don’t mean 40minutes on the trendmill midway through your afternoon but maybe a 15 minute stretching session as an afternoon break. It also believed to help release stress, enduce creativity and help to give you better job satisfaction.
- Goal setting. If your home business is one where you don’t have anyone to answer to then you will want to get into the habit of setting yourself some goals each day.
They don’t need to be massive, in fact it’s probably best that they are not. Short achievable goals set the night before for the following day are a great way to keep you focussed and on track. - Accountability. Whether you draft in a partner or you do it yourself you need to hold yourself accountable for the goals that you should now have set yourself. Implementing this should make you more determined to meet your deadlines.
- Reward yourself for small successes. Once you’ve set your goals and made yourself accountable, once you reach your target then make sure you reward yourself. In a normal office environment you’d be looking for the praise from a manager or the acknowledgement at least that what your doing is appreciated. This is hard when your on your own but the motivation benefits of rewarding or praising yourself is very powerful. Even if its just a cake or treating yourself to a nice bottle of wine.
- Stand back and evalute. If you find that your not meeting your goals take a step back and question your process. Is there something that could be made more efficient and you more productive. Write down areas of your work that you get frustrated with and see if you can’t troubleshoot them to find out the cause of your annoyance as its probably something you’ll be able to change for the better.
- Dress for success. Ok so you work from home and you have additional benefits such as slobbering around in your pyjamas or dressing gown whilst sitting down to do your work. However this isn’t really conducisive to getting you into the right frame of mind. You really should make the effort to get changed and treat your worktime as just that. It can also help give you a more positive feeling about what you are doing.
- Get out of the house at least once a day. If you work at home that doesn’t mean that you have to become a hermit. Try to make a consertive effort to make time to leave the house even if it is just for a walk down to the park and back, simply to breath in some clean air and clear your thoughts. Being couped up like a battery chicken never leaving your desk for weeks on end is not conducive to a happy, motivated worker.
- Leave the house work alone. When you take a break make sure that is exactly what it is. Don’t fall into the trap of quickly sneaking a few house hold chores into the time you should be taking for a real break. Because before you know it you’ll have spent more time that you intended on your break doing odd jobs.
